Frequently Asked Questions
You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers.
Will this delete all of my data from the Internet?
Unfortunately, not even a magic squirrel who grants wishes could make that come true.
The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil. It’s your personal data. And like every valuable commodity, everyone wants to protect it.
This is only one step towards that goal. Data brokers aren’t the only groups that hold your data. And not every data broker is willing to part with your data, even with our assistance.
Think of it like brushing your teeth. Data hygiene is about deleting as much of your rogue data as possible every month to reduce your total risk.
You won’t get every bit clean, but it’s still important that you do it regularly.
What are the risks to me if I do nothing?
Data brokers are under no obligation to verify that the information they have about you is correct. This can affect you in a number of ways:
- Employment: If there is wrong information, you can be denied employment without recourse.
- Reputation: You can be attributed to events, websites, pictures, etc that you have no connection to. When someone pays to see your profile, who knows what damaging information it contains?
- Spam: Spammers and legitimate marketers use this data to bombard you with sales materials, by phone, mail, and email. If you are not on the list, it is harder for them to reach you.
- Principle: Data brokers are making money selling your information. They do not share their profits with you. Is that acceptable?
Is deletion permanent?
No! Data brokers often re-add people that have opted-out, without their permission. It is critical that you opt-out as often as possible. With our service, that is monthly, but we hope to make it daily in the future.
Who do you send letters to?
We have a database of known data brokers, we send them all a letter periodically requesting that they remove you from their system.
We won’t send letters to your grandmother. Unless she is a data broker. If she is, you should probably call her. She misses you.
What if a broker refuses to delete my data?
Some brokers refuse to delete your data. Over time we will develop methods to compel them to remove your data from their system. As more people sign up, our community’s voice will grow louder, making it more difficult for brokers to ignore your requests.
How do I cancel?
It’s easy. Click the Sign In button at the top of the screen. After signing in, you can manage your membership, including canceling at any time.
You must cancel your membership at least 14 days before your annual membership renews to avoid being billed for future annual memberships.
If you are unable to sign in, you can use our contact form to cancel. Please include the phrase “Cancel Membership” in the message body.
Unfortunately, we can’t refund payment for the first year membership unless you cancel within 7 days of signing up.
Are you a law firm?
No. We are not a law firm. Our attorneys review our letters for maximum effect.
Do you provide credit card or identity theft protection services?
No. We do not provide these types of services. Deleting your data from data brokers may lower your risk of identity theft if a broker gets hacked, but we are not claiming to provide this or credit card protection as a benefit of membership.
